The Spartan Race is considered the hardest between the two OCR or Obstacle Course Races for many reasons. The pure physicality of the race focused on individual strength and endurance makes it the clear winner of all of the other competitions out there today.

What is the Spartan Race?

Joe De Sena developed the Spartan Race in 2010 as a way to bring in more accessibility for those who wanted to race with the challenge of obstacles. What started with a mere 500 people who finished the first year has grown to millions who enter and finish worldwide.

Competitors and winners of various races get together during the Spartan Race World Championships each year to determine an overall winner. This race requires athletes to train in a way that prepares them for one of the most demanding and most competitive obstacle course races in the world.

The Spartan Race consists of various lengths of the race depending on your running level. These distances vary from 5K to 26 long miles that individual competitors run in while facing challenging and seemingly impossible obstacles.

What Are the Different Levels of the Spartan Race?

The Spartan Race, while one of the most challenging obstacles course races, also has created different levels to accommodate different ages and fitness levels. These levels allow competitors to start at the entry-level race and work their way up to the more challenging levels.

Here are the most common levels for the Spartan Race:

  • Spartan Sprint is the beginners level race that consists of competitors racing for 3-5 miles with about 20 obstacles per race. 
  • Spartan Super is the following level in the Spartan Race series. It is typically between 7.7 and 11 miles long, with about 24 obstacles per race.
  • Spartan Beast is considered one of the races that most competitors strive for. The race consists of competitors running between 12-16 miles with about 28 obstacles per race.
  • Spartan Ultra Beast takes the OCR to an extreme level. With competitors running about 28 miles and facing around 69 obstacles, the Ultra Beast is a challenging competition.

Obstacles in a Spartan Race

With the various levels of the Spartan Race and the number of multiple obstacles developed, some are more common than others. The challenge comes into play when, or if, you fail an obstacle because then you are required to do 30 Burpees to make up the loss.

What is the Tough Mudder?

A Tough Mudder is another one of the top three obstacle course races that involve competitors worldwide. The name comes from the style of the events, which primarily include mud and water for most obstacles and challenges.

There are currently two types of Tough Mudder events: Tough Mudder Challenges and Tough Mudder Races. They are differentiated by allowing anyone to enter the challenges, however, only for top-notch and fiercely competitive athletes.

Like other OCRs, the Tough Mudder helps competitors face some of the most grueling fitness challenges of their lives. The race is known for its ability to build and challenge your strength and cardio levels and your endurance, stamina, balance, coordination, and much more.

What Are the Different Levels of the Tough Mudder?

Like the Spartan Race, the Tough Mudder also has various levels which allow competitors of varying fitness levels to compete. This means that for the Challenges, people who are just beginning can start at the beginners level and then enter more challenging levels as they move along.

The various levels also allow accessibility for a wide range of people of varying ages and abilities to participate in something like this race. The Tough Mudder also offers challenges and events for children who may be interested in playing in a bit of mud from time to time.

Here are some of the most common levels of a Tough Mudder;

  • Half Mudder is for entry-level competitors who want to start with OCRs. This challenge consists of competitors running 5 miles and facing various obstacles along the way.
  • Tough Mudder Classic is the next level for those wanting more of a challenge. This competition consists of competitors running 8-10 miles and various obstacles along the way.
  • Tough Mudder Night Version is about 10-12 miles with various obstacles, but the biggest challenge is that competitors do this during the night.
  • 24-Hour Tough Mudder is not about the miles but the endurance of staying with the challenge for 24 hours. 

Obstacles in a Tough Mudder

Like other OCR competitions, A Tough Mudder is well-known for its various obstacles that range in difficulty. While some are more on the mild side, others add a level of complexity some cannot endure.

Spartan Race vs. Tough Mudder: Which is Harder?

Determining which is more complicated, Spartan Race or a Tough Mudder depends heavily on an individual preference. Often, the choice boils down to the person’s fitness level and the ability to conquer the various obstacles.

This often means that the choice between the two events also depends on the various obstacles and challenges set up. While the events are often similar, there are some changes in the different venues held.

Take a look at some of the similarities and differences between the Spartan Race and the Tough Mudder.

What Are the Similarities?

While these different events are both considered OCR or Obstacle Course Races, they have similarities and differences. The most relevant difference is that they are both considered one of the world’s top three obstacle course races.

Here are some of the similarities between a Spartan Race and a Tough Mudder:

  • Both events have a little something for every level of fitness. For example, the Spartan Race and the Tough Mudder offer an event for entry-level competitors.
  • It is one thing that they both offer obstacles, but the other thing that shows similarities in the obstacles is that several of them are either the same or close to the same.
  • In both events, there is the element of water and dirt. The Spartan may not have as much mud, but it has some water features.
  • Both events seem to take hydration seriously through the course by offering water stations at about every mile.

What Are the Differences?

Although the Spartan Race and Tough Mudder have several things in common, they also have many differences that make them stand out. This creates a better experience, especially for those who like to participate in both competitions. 

Here are some of the differences between a Spartan Race and a Tough Mudder:

  • Many comments on the physicality of the Spartan Race in that if you fail or choose not to do an obstacle, you are required to do 30 Burpees to make up the difference. The Tough Mudder allows you to skip a challenge if needed.
  • The various obstacles and challenges in the Tough Mudder are designed to be challenging and quite a bit of fun. In the Spartan Race, the competition is taken a bit more seriously.
  • While the Tough Mudder focuses many of their challenges and obstacles on working in teams or partners, the Spartan Race stresses the importance of working alone. Some people are allowed to keep you motivated by cheering for you in the Spartan, but they cannot help you in any way.
  • Both events offer swag items to their competitors, and while they include some great trinkets, many people agree that the Spartan Races tend to have more you can walk away with.

Which Event is Harder?

When it comes down to it, determining which is harder between the Spartan Race and the Tough Mudder depends on your preference. There is, of course, one clear winner when it comes to the amount of strength and endurance one needs to have.

Most people agree that the Spartan Race is hands down the hardest of the two competitions for many reasons. The most important of these reasons is that the event stresses the importance of working by yourself during the Spartan.

During the Tough Mudder, several obstacles are harder to overcome by yourself, allowing you to work as a team or partner group. If they did not do this, there might be several people who cannot finish the competition.

In the Spartan Race, even the tougher challenges, like the Log Roll, are done by yourself. Some people have even commented that the distance you carry the log is farther than the one in a Tough Mudder.

Is Training Required For These Types of Events?

It is crucial to keep in mind that you must prepare yourself anytime you enter something that requires physical exertion. This includes having a physical exam with your doctor to ensure that you can handle the effort.

Additionally, you must train for the event to ensure that you can handle the various obstacles that you may encounter. Many experts suggest that you prepare for 6-8 months before entering a Spartan Race or a Tough Mudder. 

Interestingly enough, even those who have trained for a long time for these events can sometimes get injured. You do, however, lessen the chance of suffering an injury if you do some proper training before your big event.

What Does Training Look Like for a Spartan Race and a Tough Mudder?

Considering the challenge both of these events require, experts recommend that you train extensively before entering one. Proper training may not prevent every injury, but it can go a long way to helping you prepare.

Experts suggest three main training methods to get you ready for your big race:

  • Overall Conditioning. While the Spartan Race and Tough Mudder are both races, it is essential to remember that they are also much more than that. Since the various challenges do not only require cardiovascular training, it is suggested that you work on different other training methods such as yoga, planks, and maybe even practice with obstacle courses.
  • Strength training. This type of training is essential for your upper body, including your grip. These events often require competitors to cross monkey bars and other challenging equipment. 
  • Plyometrics. This type of training focuses on the explosive ability to get your body from one place to another by jumping and landing. Box jumps, squats, clap push-ups, and various other exercises fall into this category.

While these are just three different types of training exercises you can focus on, consider that nutrition is also vital in making sure your body is ready for a Spartan Race or Tough Mudder. It is most likely that you have never participated in something this intense, and it requires a different approach to training for most people.

Final Thoughts

Overall, both the Spartan Race and the Tough Mudder competitions are challenging as two of the hardest OCR events. The Spartan Race, which focuses on individual competition, which taxes an individual’s body more, is the clear winner for the more challenging event.
